Fast Track Switching - Application fields



The automation field represents the main application area for Fast Track Switching, given that Ethernet-based systems are replacing field busses in this environment. In order to meet the performance and determinism demands in these environments, Standard Ethernet-based solutions are available, as are proprietary solutions that do not run with standard components, and therefore require special hardware. Such approaches lead to expensive and inflexible solutions, however, which are not in the users’ best interests.

Applications for Fast Track Switching in the automation fields are not restricted, and cover the entire range. The right place for this switching technology is wherever a switch from conventional field bus solutions to Ethernet-based systems is planned. Fast Track Switching provides a technology for all applications, as it allows the same switch to be used in PROFINET and EtherNet/IP environments, resulting in a reduction in the variety of components.

Basically speaking, Fast Track Switching technology can also be put to work in other application fields in addition to automation technology. The technology can be deployed wherever a number of different types of frames with different priorities compete. The precondition here is that the frame to be given priority must have a header that allows it to be recognized, thereby enabling the use of the Fast Track Switching mechanism.
